Ca' d'Oro facade detail

Description

Ca' d'Oro in Venice, Italy, is my most favorite building in all the world. When you show images of the Palazzo to people who speak Italian they always ask: So, why is it called the 'Golden House' (= Ca' d'Oro)? After all the facade looks more like white marble. The answer is that the building is over 500 years old and originally it used to be painted in blue and gold. I always have a hard time imaging how this must have looked. I mean the white marble today looks so noble and majestic - but gold and blue? Doesn't it look like Disneyland?

This reminds me of an interesting fact of how we think about art. Take ancient greek statues for examples. To us it's clear that they are classy with their all white appearance. To paint them in color would be almost sacrilegious. Yet 2'000 years ago, when they originally were created, that's exactly how they looked for they used to be painted, too (see images below).
I guess to our eyes they have to be white because that's how we see that they are very old and their being very old is an important part of why we percieve them as classy and noble and "high art" in the first place.
